How To: Inspired by Selena Gomez's Rope Braid

I was looking through pictures of my trip to Hawaii from about 3 years ago, when I found a picture of me at a luau with this rope braid. I had to recreate it for the blog. It's easy and quick, and perfect for spring. This one from Selena Gomez is similar:

T O O L S :
  • hair elastic
  • brush or comb
  • decorative flower or pin (optional)
M E T H O D :
  • Pull your hair to one side--the same side as your bangs, if you have them.
  • Brush out hair and divide in half.
  • Take one half and cross it over the other.
  • Ok, now this is the not-so-difficult part: take one half and twist clockwise. Hold it.
  • Take the other half and twist it counter clockwise. Hold.
  • Now, take one half and cross it over the other, retwisting as needed.
  • Secure with a hair elastic--I used a small clear one. That's it!

T I P S :
  • If done correctly, you'll have a rope braid! Otherwise, the hair will automatically untwist when you secure the elastic.
  • I highly suggest doing this in front of a mirror, so you can make sure each half is being twisted in opposite directions.
  • I had straightened my hair, so my hair doesn't have the volume of Selena's. To remedy this, I'd suggest doing this on wavy hair. Or try a root lifter or volumizing powder too.
  • Add a flower or pin if you like, as I did. It's really easy and takes fewer than 5 minutes! If you try it out, let me see pics!

  1. This is great! I remember how shocked I was the first time I tried this and it didn't unravel! Even without your waves for volume it looks great!

  6. again, something not applicable for my hair, but it looks nice on you, I'm sure I would get it wrong anyway and it would untwist the next second ;)

  16. What a perfect braided style! I've tried this before but like you've mentioned I must have done it the wrong way because it always unravel. Therefore I stick to fish braids and the normal one. Will have to try this again, thanks!

  17. I've been pulling raids lately so this sounds like the perfect twist (haha...pun!). Whenever I saw this in the past I thought that the twist would unravel but with the method posted, I can see how it would work! Awesome!

  32. Love this idea! Too bad my hair has too many layers. Even when I do a normal side braid, some hairs just stick out. >:( It vexes me.
