Hi everyone! My name is Jackie and I'm a co-writer for my blog, An Enchanted Evening. I'm beyond excited about doing a guest post for Elle. She has been such a sweet and encouraging blog buddy to me, that when she needed some help this week, I was more than willing. Remember to keep Elle in your thoughts as she is going through this difficult time. Shower her with lots of love and sweet comments.

So before my post, feel more than welcome to read more about us, Suzie and I have just been blogging less than a year, but already we are so grateful to get to share with each and every one of you.

Now onto the good stuff!

If you're like me, then by Thursday, you are dying for a little pick-me up. The weather here has been gloomy, which has put a serious damper on my mood. I know we all have those moments where we just need something to make our days a little better. So here are a couple of my tips/tricks to turn that funky mood into a fabulous one.

1. Take a couple of minutes and meditate. Now I usually use this time to pray and listen. No sounds, no music, no TV, no distractions. Just sit by yourself and enjoy the quiet. Breathe deep and try to focus on something positive [even a good memory will work].

2. Listen to your favorite song. Something that has a bit of an up beat vibe. I love "How sweet it is" by James Taylor or "Mamma Said" by The Shirelles. Or a song you just loved as a kid, a little N*sync can go a long way. [shout out to all you 90's fans]

3. Treat yourself to something. Go get a mani. Go eat something you love [red velvet cupcake for me please!]. Stop by starbucks and get your favorite drink. Make that batch of tea that you can't get enough of... something that puts a smile on your beautiful face.

4. Exercise. Now, coming from someone who finds working out a pain in my booty, let me tell you... it can make you feel pretty dang good. We've all heard the little rumor about those endorphins but the rumors are true! Working out helps you to feel better about yourself. So get out there and go do that zumba class [my personal favorite] or go for a hike in your local park. Getting off the couch might be a great way to get out of that funk.

5. Last but not least, surround yourself with people who make you smile. It seems cheesy but this might be the best way to change your day from negative to one you won't forget. Whenever I feel horrible or seem to be having a rough day, I go to the people who love and support me. The people who make me feel great no matter what! Somehow I always end up laughing and forgetting about whatever was stinkin' up my mood.

First off I want say that even though it's a very sad reason that Elle can't post for a bit, I am excited that I get to help her out and hopefully gain some new readers (hey, look at that two birds, one stone). Some background on little ol' me. I am currently a nanny of three: Whiny Magee (5), Master of Disaster (3) & BabyGirl (1). And because my days are spent playing with kids I am practically, sorta like, a stay at mom and let's face it, that's not a particularly trend group (no offense). So I won't be able to give you any beauty tips or fashion advice. However, I *can* tell all about the ridiculous things that "my kids" say and do.

Whiny Magee got an etch-a-sketch awhile ago and every now and then he gets really into drawing with it. He was in one of these etch-a-sketch phases when I told him about all the really cool art people can do on them. So we hopped on my computer and Google image searched "etch-a-sketch". These were the really cool ones I showed him:

I'm E and I blog over at E is Random. I've been reading ElleSees for a while now and love all her tips and tricks. While she spends some time with her family, I wanted to help on her blog so she doesn't have to worry. And I thought I'd talk about one area of makeup I love.

I am an eye makeup junkie. I love collecting the many colors of shadows (so pretty!), tubes of mascara (all the promises!), and types of eye liner (gel, kohl, and more!).
But there are a few products that I always end up coming back too. So I thought I'd share my favorites with you.

Mascara

My splurge when it comes to mascara is Lancome's Hypnose Drama. My only warning is that it tends to dry pretty crusty, so whatever you do, don't rub your eyes (bad any idea anyways, but mascara flakes are the worst).

My regular use mascaras are Maybelline's Colossal (yellow tube) and Volume Express The Falsies (purple tube). And if I'm going out, I layer them up for an extra thick, dramatic look.

Eye Shadow

My go to brand for quality eye shadow is Mac. Maybe it's the display laying out the seemingly endless colors, but it always catches my eye. And the shadows are high quality. I especially recommend splurging for more neutral, everyday wear colors. A couple of my go-to colors are Shroom (a creamy beige) and Shale (a grayish purple).

If you are looking to start a collection, I recommend buying a palette and filling it. The cost is a little more upfront, but you save money in the long run. Plus, MAC will recycle old, empty eye shadow trays for you.

For more affordable options, there are plenty of great brands out there. Elle has mentioned the Naked Palette, which I love. You are probably thinking $48 sounds like a lot, but you get 12 shadows. At $4 a piece, that's a pretty good deal. And you can mix and match them for endless options. Maybelline also has an Expert Wear Quad compact for $6. I love it in Designer Chocolate.

Eyeliner

This is the one area I haven't really found my absolutely favorites, so I'm asking for your help. Eyeliner is something I just usually end grabbing on my way out of the store. What are your favorites? Do you splurge or do you use drug store brands?

Outfit of the Week: Cut Your Hair

Thanks for being so sweet last week! I just adore y'all. While I believe I'm authentic on the blog (but still retain privacy), it's not always perfect peaches around here. Yet I don't want to be the blog that complains about everything/uses my blog constantly as a vent session. So it was nice to just let it all out and not apologize for it.

One thing I will apologize for is my hair. It's the one splurge, the one thing I'm vain about. And I've been keeping pics of myself far away from the blog lately. When my beloved stylist quit, and then her replacement quit, I was in quite a pickle. I decided to dye my brown, highlighted hair. I'd never done it myself before, sans the occasional root touch up or glaze. I had to use the whole box. And it came out black with unintentional ombre on the ends. My grays stayed (I left it on longer than the directions stated). It looked awful. My boss said it looked "witchy" (it did). But thanks to Twitter reccs, I am madly in love with Dada Salon! Yay!

It curls! Just a little flip, an end curl, a ringlet curl

How to Use:

Place on the heat pad
Decide your temp by choosing your hair type (fine, normal, thick) and turn on. I use thick, but it feels hotter than 395!
The Seductress beeps once it is on and then twice once it is ready--this takes maybe 20 seconds
Use it to straighten, wave, or curl hair. It takes me 10 min to do my hair with it.
It's been featured in Allure, Lucky, and was named best styling tool for minimal hair damage!

My Opinion:

I LOVE it. I like a product that does what is says, is easy to use, AND that is multi-purpose.

It straightens, waves, and curls hair (I can do a tutorial on any of these if you'd like. Just let me know!). This is something than cannot be done with a regular flat iron, unless the iron heats on the outside as well, but it's definitely clever marketing by Sultra.

My hair was instantly shinier--a great bonus. I didn't experience drag either.
I love how the Seductress can be used for international travel. Speaking of travel, it's all I need to do my hair in one tool.
It's available online and via Sephora for $210. That's expensive (to me) but you could think of it as 3 tools in 1. I've found it much cheaper on Amazon. Sultra has quite the array of hair tools, if you're in need.
I recommend the Seductress by Sultra highly! 5/5 rating!

DIY: Makeup Brush Organization

In yesterday's Beauty Organization post, I shared how I store my makeup brushes. This is the easiest thing ever. Directions: Pour. Add brushes. And you're done. This works better than decorative sand, glass marbles or pebbles, or coffee. Read on:

Weird Elle Fact #9372, I have a habit of doing this, just like Amelie (just play the first few seconds, if you'd like):

Bonus Fact: I like to crack creme brulee like Amelie too. So basically I'm French. Oui.

And it used to be a habit of mine when I'd go into Sephora (just to browse, right?) as I viewed the brushes and gadgets in containers. A few years ago they changed to these glass beads and I had to have some for my own. Oh, I had my brushes in a glass, but when I'd go to pull out a brush, the rest would tumble out. I asked a salesperson one day what they used and he said Sephora uses crazy expensive glass beads. I sighed in a French accent. He said to go to the craft store and get vase filler beads in the floral section. And that's what I did!

Try ColorFill Vase Filler Plastic Beads (around $4). Use whatever container you'd like (free & up).

Pour the beads about 1/3 to 1/2 in the container (depends on size). Remember to use caution if you have children.

New Year, New You: Beauty Organization

When it comes to beauty products, if I can't see it, I won't use it. That may seem too cluttered for some, but it's a necessity for me to have everything in my sight. Here's how I organize my 900000 (approx.) beauty essentials.

I know I'm gonna get so many disapproving comments, but this is how I've organized my hair tools for years. It's never affected my tools. They're hung from a hook, and these are just a few--this pic was taken in '09, so it's changed a bit in there. Note my Product Hoarding Stash and my Velcro Rollers!

I originally shared my makeup organization post here. I should've tidied it up for the internet, but this is how it looks daily.

I spray painted this primary-colored organizer silver. It houses my eye shadows, arranged by browns, blacks, and purple/pinks. My palettes aren't shown, but they're right beside it.

Another organizing tip I've done for years--beads to hold my brushes. I'll share a quick How To tomorrow on this.

I use this bleacher-style organizer to house my hair/skin products. I also used it to hold treats for my Super Bowl party last year!

When my mom gave me these boxes, I was unsure what to do with them. They house my polish collection, which I zip up and bring with me to wherever. The tops of the boxes are perfect to paint my nails on.

Velvety, copper shade. Can be used wet or dry. Shown without/with flash.

I liked it, but similar color to other products I own. I'd try their other shades.

OVERALL: Loved this bag, which always features full or deluxe samples, and the theme was earth-friendly.

January Birchbox:

Birchbox Magnet--I'm using it, so I guess it's useful?
Algenist Firming and Lifting Cream--Liking it so far
FIX Malibu Immaculate Complexion Advanced Antioxidant Serum--I like it, and it feels like a face primer. I could see how some would break out with this.
Juicy Couture Perfume--I'm super sensitive to scents, so this smelled good, but I had to give it away.
Zoya Polish--LOVING this polish and doubt I will buy any other brand. I love the pastel lilac color.
Witchcraft Granola--Mine tasted burnt, but other reviews liked this.

OVERALL: Birchbox has been hit or miss for me. I realize the products are expensive, luxury items, so it's been fun to try them.

Winner? MyGlam! I love the size of the samples and find them useful. Check out what I got last month from them.

Elle's Quick Tips: Keep Curly Lashes

How was your weekend? Mine was just right--I hung out with friends talking until the restaurant closed and the owner made us leave. And I've just about kicked this cold, so it was a great weekend overall. Now onto my Quick Tip!

I have long lashes, but they aren't curly. In order to get that look, I use an eyelash curler. However, after a few hours my big, curly lashes lose their steam, regardless of the brand/type of mascara (yes, even curling mascaras). If I was going out somewhere later, I'd have to recurl them. Sometimes the recurling would make my lashes stick together and it looked worse. One morning while applying hairspray I thought, Why isn't there an eyelash spray to hold curled lashes? This was my thought process: hair loses its curl by humidity...water. Simply put, mascara comes in regular and waterproof. When I apply waterproof mascara the water doesn't affect my lashes, like an anti-frizz serum. But I don't really use waterproof often...

Long, boring story short--this is how I get my lashes to stay curled all day:

Curl lashes
Take water-proof mascara wand and wipe the wand so there's very little product left. The brand/type doesn't matter.
Apply the lightest coat to your lashes--just once through.
Take whatever brand/type mascara you'd like to apply (do as many coats as you'd like) and your lashes will stay curled all day.

To further prove my point, here are my lashes after 6 hours. I curled both, used the same curling mascara, one coat each, but my right (your left) eye didn't have the waterproof base coat. I didn't wear eyeliner or shadow on either eye. Yes, I felt/looked odd, but I wanted to show this really works. Try it!

Over time, it is easy to become distracted. Writing this goal down somewhere you will look at it every day is a better way to remind yourself of your dream.

Blogging is a great way to start the process. With virtually the entire Internet as your audience, you are more accountable to upholding your promises. The support you can receive from followers on the road to achieving your goal can be overwhelming and help you face odds with determination and confidence even through difficult setbacks. For example, for people suffering from rare cancers like mesothelioma to a more common disorder like diabetes, the love and support that an unexpected community can provide can be the push one needs to make it through any prognosis.

Here are some easy ways to start the process:

- Write down your goals on paper. This will help you create concrete objectives so you can accomplish your goals.

- Be specific. Set goals for yourself that are realistic and obtainable, the more specific the better. For example, "I will take one hour out of each day for myself" is more realistic than "I will make sure to have free time."

- Set a period of time in which to accomplish your goal.

- Share your goals! Communicating with others will help you feel accountable to yourself. Once you finish them, the support and encouragement you get will continue to spur you on.

As you begin to accomplish your goals, your quality of life will improve. This method works not only for resolutions like weight loss, but also for overall lifestyle improvements. Are there things you've always wanted to do, or places you've always wanted to go? Make a list. Put the ideas into concrete words. This will reinforce the desire to accomplish those things, and soon you will feel empowered and strong enough to do anything.

Outfit of the Week: All I Need

I had a pretty rough weekend (but things are getting better, yay!), so when it came to doing my hair or thinking of an outfit, I wanted to avoid just that...thinking. But as is my analytic nature, I did a lot of thinking about Sugar, and how lucky I am to have her still in my life (one day I'll have to share the stories of my great-granny). I thought about the prayers and thoughts from everyone she knows and how it all worked out. I thought about the amazing support you all have given. Just knowing you're thinking about me, someone you don't even know, is all I need. Thank you.

This post gets less depressing, promise! ;) First off, this outfit is kind of the reverse of this outfit. I totally admit it. I wore a long sleeve white tee shirt and this comfort-inducing navy cardigan (both were fr Old Navy).
I've gotten a bit of cold (convinced it was from the hospital!), so I'm still avoiding taking pics and am all about comfort. For even more comfort, I added jeans and Toms. For a pop of color, I threw on this mustard scarf (I got mine off Ebay!)
But don't let all this fool you for one second when it comes to makeup--I had to look presentable. I did my hair this way, applied concealer (a must!), mascara, and this lipstick I got a couple of months ago in a blogger swap.

How To: Waves Without Heat

When most people are decompressing from a stressful weekend, they probably have a glass of wine or go work out. Me? I play with my hair. I wanted something that would be quick to do, since I knew I'd be very tired in the morning heading to work. I decided on some waves without heat. I liked it so much I've done it twice this week--once with medium rollers and once with large rollers. Enjoy.

You'll Need:

1 pack of Spiral Rollers (I used medium one night and large the next)
Comb
Frizz-Free Serum
Holding Product (hairspray, mousse, spray gel, styling putty, etc)
Damp Hair

Directions:

Start with damp/freshly-washed hair (Exciting right? I usually request day-old hair!).
Comb through hair and apply serum--I need something to fight frizz, but Moroccan Oil works fine for most people.
Divide hair in half and part as usual. Lay out your spiral rollers. I got mine from Target for about $9. Try these or these (or Google "spiral foam rollers" if you can't find them at the store).
Pick a side and choose a 1 inch section of hair. Take a medium/large spiral roller and place under the section. Start about 2 inches from the root and wrap around the roller, away from your face. Bend up the ends.

I start at the root instead of rolling ends to top because I'm going for waves, not a ringlet curl. You can tuck in the ends or not--not tucked in will produce beachy waves. Continue all over hair.

Let hair air dry or dry overnight. You *can* use a hair dryer BUT this is a no-heat look and you'd need heat protectant as well.
Undo the rollers and apply more serum, if needed, and a holding product. That's it!

Notes:

Note how I have roller space (you can see the roller). This produces a looser wave. Wrap closer together for a tighter wave. I don't suggest the small foam rollers because they produce more of a ringlet curl than a wave (I've tried!)
For each section you wrap, drop down in your hair where you start the roller until you are done with the first section of your parted hair. Then repeat the process on the other side, starting about 2 inches, and then the next roller, maybe 2.5 inches and so on. Your hair in rollers will look like a "v" and will look more natural once this is over, instead of having each roller lined up.
I parted my hair in half so I could be able to sleep on my back in the rollers, to make it a little more comfortable.
This took 5 minutes to wrap and about 5 minutes to style.

If you're new to this series, I started off with Closet Organization Essentials. Last week was all about the Closet Overhaul (did you clean out your closet yet?). Today I'm focusing on style. Remember how I mentioned not to donate your old clothes yet? I hope you didn't because today we might get rid of more of them--read on:

The Rules:
In this Ask Elle post, I mentioned when I first noticed fashion, but I didn't discuss my own rules for style. Here are the basic rules I use, and many are culled from the books above:

Look for Inspiration:

Magazines, style blogs, and street style are great starting points into developing style, or just an outfit. The colors I hear in music from having synaesthesia influence my outfits often.

Stick to Basics:

You'll get far more use out of basics (check out the 50 classics link above) and you'll always be in style.

Remember the Rule of 3:

If you can't wear it 3 different ways, don't buy it (of course I'm excluding certain items, like a wedding dress). Take a dress, for example. Can you wear it dressy and casual? Add a belt? Can you add a shirt or cardigan over it? This really curbs my shopping and makes me think before purchasing.

Know When to Spend:

I spend money on classics, but I go the cheaper route if there's a fad piece I must have.

Know Your Body & How to Flatter/Hide:

It's time to be realistic on what looks good on you--The Pocket Stylist is a great resource for this. Learn how to hide problem areas and enhance your assets. Everyone has assets!!

Tailor It

You will look your best if your clothes fit well. Find a tailor (ask a department store for a recommendation) and get clothes altered when needed. I always assumed tailors were for men's suits and for formal dresses--I was so wrong! Just a simple alteration can make you look like a million bucks without spending nearly that much.

Look Good, Feel Good

When it comes down to it, wear what makes you happy. Having confidence will always get people to notice you before the outfit!

Quick Tip: Easy Shadow Lines

Trying to get eyes even when applying shadow can be frustrating! Luckily, this can be solved with just a couple of pieces of tape.

How and where to apply the tape depends on the eye look you want. Simply take a small piece of tape, decide the angle you'd like, and apply. Make sure the tape side becomes your line--not the jagged top/bottom edges. Tip: apply another piece of tape Pac-Man style to achieve a "V." To make the look more noticable on camera, I angled my tape up--tilt it down right for more of a winged effect.

I used a fluffy brush and applied color over my lid, and stopped right where the tape begins (although it looks like I'm trying to attack my eye). Having that tape in place provides me with a clean line.

Peel off the tape once you've achieved the effect you desire. In this picture, I have brown shadow along my crease (and a terrified look apparently).

For a more dramatic look, I brushed brown as my base, and then black in the crease and outer "V." I then smudged the black under my bottom lashes. This really looked better in person, vs. camera!

TIPS:

Your line will be very obvious once you remove the tape. If you don't desire this look, blend in.
Don't want to use Scotch tape? Try medical tape, a business card, or an index card to achieve similar results.

Visiting her in the hospital and being away from a computer have caused a pause in my usual blogging/commenting, so your patience, prayers, and positive thoughts mean the world. Outfit of the Week: Ritual Union

I was listening to Ritual Union but the song itself didn't influence me. Instead, those two words, ritual union, were my motivation for this outfit. I took classics--cable knit sweater, plaid shirt, and jeans--and attempted to dress them up. I'm pretty sure it's a standard JCrew look--just add wind machine. I thought of the sometimes mindless ritual of putting on clothes, combined with the union of comfortable, go-to, classics, but in a nicer-looking way.
I'm still in Winter Calm-mode, so this creamy cable knit sweater from F21 fit my mood. It's currently very windy (and there might be a sprinkle of snow, but nothing like the snow from exactly a year ago!)
But it's not all pale neutrals around here--I did insert a little color with a plaid shirt underneath the sweater.
Some black skinnies--I swear I always wear these--black pumps, along with this hair (but a bigger curling iron barrel), and a bit of red lipstick finished my look. PS: I dyed my hair and it came out really dark, so no outfit photos this week! Maybe I will coax myself into it later.

How To: Brighten Stained Nails

Dreamy dark shades and festive holiday colors adorn my nails in fall and winter, leaving behind a dark stain. No matter how much polish remover I apply, I'm always stuck with a stained, yellow nail. Not cute! Instead of painting my nails to hide the color (and make the staining worse), I'm using the same ideas for cleaning my teeth. These methods really work! Read on:

Method 1:

Try a brightening toothpaste & scrub those nails with a toothbrush.

Method 2:

Pour a little baking soda into a bowl.
Add enough hydrogen peroxide to the baking soda to make a paste.
Mix and scrub nails.
Rinse and repeat until nails are clean!

Optional:

I didn't use it for this tutorial (I've used it since) but to make your edges look whiter, run a white pencil, like the one I shared here, underneath the edges.

Note:

These methods will not work for discolored nails due to medical conditions.

New Year, New You: Closet Overhaul

So last week I began New Year, New You--did you do your homework and get the supplies? Don't worry--there's still plenty of time. We will be working on your closet this week and next week. This week I'm tackling the dreaded Closet Overhaul. Get ready to make some space in your closet. I do this every year and it works. Here are a few tricks I use to keep my closet pared down and organized:

Break out the Bags--Before you do anything, get supplies ready. You'll need trash bags and Space Saver Bags. And some free time.
Divide & Conquer--This is the hardest step of the whole process, but worth it in the long run.

Divide clothes into Keep, Maybe, Donate, and Trash piles. I actually just keep the Keep on the hangers. If it's torn, stained, etc. & can't be repurposed, trash it. Tip: Many places give tax credits for donations!

Seasons Change--I swear by Space Bags (I use them for traveling too sometimes).

My winter clothes go into the Space Bags, since it's not cold in Atlanta for very long, and sweaters take up valuable space. Depending on the amount of clothes and/or climate, this could work for all seasons. Think of the space you could save!

Set The Mood--This might sound ridiculous, but when I'm doing my annual Closet Overhaul, I like to try to make it as fun as possible (and because Clean Your Room! Now! doesn't sound as fun).

Cool Your Jets! I get hot and cranky trying on clothes to see what fits (note: I don't try on every item I own, just some of the Maybe items). Once the crankiness sets in, I quit the whole thing. I vow to do it later, but I don't. If the room/closet is cooler, I stick with it. TIP: Speaking of cranky, don't do this when you have pms and your clothes don't fit right!
Tunage Time--Another way to keep it fun is to turn up the music. Time flies when I can sing and dance along to music--and I don't mean THAT hop-dance we do when trying to get into tight pants. Don't forget to use a good mirror and maybe practice that Runway Strut, you know, just in case.

Extra, Extras--I prefer doing my Closet Overhaul alone, but having friends over can make it more interesting, they can take your cast-offs, and can give you opinions on what to keep. Another idea is to add a cocktail/mocktail or two, whether you're at it alone or with entourage in tow. Remember: If you go into with a bad attitude, it'll take longer and you'll be less likely to finish.

I have a candle for just about every season/occasion. However, it's about this time of year when I need a little scent detox, so coffee beans + vanilla tea light candles it is! The metal tea lights heat the beans for a comforting scent & the vanilla is subtle and calming. Bonus tips: I use this duo or this whenever I host a party to ward off the smokers' scent when they come inside.

My January resolution is to not shop--it'll help save money. Another way I'm saving money is by making my coffee treats at home using this milk frother. It's amazing, cheap, and matches my kitchen. How did I get along without it?

12 Months of Resolutions; January (and December's Results)

For every month in 2011, I chose a different resolution. Read more about that here. I chose to do monthly in the hopes that the resolution would stick. I've decided to continue the series into the new year! But before I do, I need to wrap up the results from December! As my last resolution in December, I really over did it! Check out my resolutions and results.

Stop Eating Red Meat

I decided to do this after experiencing food poisoning so many times from store-bought/restaurant food.
I ate meat twice (once from a grass-fed farm, and once because my Mama made lasagna, and you don't turn down my mother's food).
I'm still doing this, but found my energy levels have plummeted when it was that time of the month (sorry for the tmi!). I'm taking iron to help compensate.

Go Meatless Weekly

I did this 3 weeks out of 4.
I'm still doing this resolution.

Eat Out Weekly

Again, fueled by the food poisoning, I decided to stop eating at restaurants so often (I'm a horrible cook). Maybe some online cooking classes would help!I also chose this to save money and to encourage healthy eating. Minus my brother's catered wedding and rehearsal, I did well!
I'm continuing this resolution.

Blog Daily

Normally, I post 5 days a week, but for December I decided to blog every day, because I have SO MANY ideas. I'm serious; I could easily post 3xs a day if I had enough readers.
I did 32 posts in total, because I'm ~~weird~~ an overachiever.
I won't do this again because (a)lack of viewers (b)busy time of year. Everyone is busy in December anyway, so who has time to read, let alone write, 32 posts?

I'll be changing the format for how I do this series,as it seemed to confuse people starting off with last month's results and putting the new resolution at the end. I will include my resolution in another post, and then dedicate another one to the results. Also for this year, I will do a big resolution and then a bonus one.

Outfit of the Week: Eshakti & a Show

File this under Posts I Meant to Post Two Months Ago. Sorry! I was suffering from a case of Holidaze. Anyway, I scrapped the original post and wore this last night. Here we go:

In case you've not heard, Eshakti is a clothing company with a unique twist. You pick what you'd like and then you customize it, or you can get ready-to-wear. I'll explain in more detail below. The inventory constantly changes, which is a good thing, but if there's something you like, grab it asap. They sell from size 0-26, so there's something for everyone. And there are constant sales! Here's the silky, ruffly, lavender top I chose (note the Huggable Hanger I posted about yesterday and my snazzy shower curtain!):

What was my experience? I had great customer service and would happily use Eshakti again. How did I customize my top? I wanted thicker straps on the top, so I got it customized. I also put in my height, which most would call petite, but I've a long torso, so the top was a little short on me. The tank is flowy and little larger than what I normally wear, so keep that in mind when you order. But you can always return if not to your liking. I like the tank because I can wear it alone in warmer months, keep it casual with a cardigan, or dress it up with a blazer--that means it fits my Clothes Buying Rule (more on that next week!).

New Year, New You: Closet Organization Essentials

You know the drill: January 1st rolls around and you just know THIS is the year you're gonna organize everything. January 2nd comes and you're really gonna DO THIS! Maybe this weekend? No, you have that other thing you have to do. "Maybe" quickly becomes "never" and then "next year, definitely!"

No more excuses! This is a New Year, and a New You! And YOU can finally get that closet organized. We're gonna do it in small steps, starting with the organization essentials. We're going to turn that tiny closet of yours into an oasis! Ok, maybe not an oasis, but a glamorous organized closet!
PS: If you're already the master of organization, send this to someone who needs a *subtle* hint. Enjoy!

The first tool in your organization kit is the essential hanger! I absolutely swear by velvet hangers, such as these Huggable Hangers. I love these because nothing, and I mean nothing, falls off of these. I've tried flimsy camisoles, boat neck shirts, and heavy jackets on these velvet hangers and they all stay on. They save space in your closet too! Get ready to donate all of those old hangers, because you'll love these. I think I paid around $50 for 50 hangers. There are other brands that make these too and they often go on sale.

Next, you'll need a brand new mirror so you can preview outfits. Forget that $10 one who used in college. It's time for an upgrade! Remember we're trying to make that closet glamorous! The one I love is this 4-Way Mirror from Joy Mangano. (Edit: Just noticed all of the products I'm sharing today are made by her but were purchased by me over the years. I'm just obsessed with her stuff! But back to the mirror!) It reminds me of a dressing room mirror and shows your full-length. Finally, you can see what you look like at all angles. It fits right over the door--no tools needed--and easily folds in too. Mine was around $100, but other brands cost three times as much.

The last tool in your kit is for any of us who hate ironing, have a short attention span, or like to sleep in. May I present: The Steamer. In my closet I have the My Little Steamer. There are other sizes available, but I like the small model and use it for travel too. I comes in a bag and takes up so little room! Just add water and plug it in. Within 30 seconds, you'll be ready to steam those wrinkles away. I paid around $20 for mine, but there are different sizes/options that go up to $50. The steamer is quicker than ironing or using wrinkle release spray. And it's available in different colors. I own the lavender one pictured above.

How To: Dry Shampoo

Dry shampoo can be an amazing product that adds volume, eases the grease, and refreshes hair. However, it can take a little know-how to get good results. But wait! Before you skip to the end, read on and you might find a tip or two! To show how dry shampoo can add volume and refresh hair, the end result you'll see is what I did to my bedhead (I had been up for about 10 minutes prior to this tutorial) . I'm serious! I did this in fewer than 5 minutes. So if I look a little ~~lot~~ sleepy, that's why. Read on:

What Dry Shampoo Won't Do:

Clean literally dirty hair (as in mud, glue, or food, etc. You've got bigger problems, so hit the showers!)
Act like hairspray
Be a permanent replacement for washing your hair

You'll Need:

Towel
Brush
Dry shampoo
Hair in need of a revival

Choose Your Brand:

Determine your hair type/color for the correct type of shampoo you'd like to use. If you're blonde, baby powder, corn starch, or any type of dry shampoo will work for you. Lucky! If you're a brunette, try a clear or brown powdered dry shampoo. If your hair is curly (not wavy), try a product geared toward that, like this one from Tresseme or this one from Pssssst for curly and wavy hair.
Many stores will take back products if they aren't for you, so check before you buy. For those that can use anything, Psssst!, Batiste, Suave, Tresseme, or Salon Graffix are great drugstore brands. Oscar Blandi, Bumble & Bumble, Klorane, or Ojon are good pricier options.
The type and smell factor into the choice as well--some have a chemical smell and some give me a headache from the fragrance. Choose spray powder if you'd like to get rid of greasy roots, but there will be a residue left behind--something to consider, my brunettes! A clear dry shampoo won't give as much volume, but helps with freshness and shine.

How To:

Dry shampoo should only target the root of the hair.
Choose sections of hair, hold up/out the sections, and spray in short bursts--you aren't spray painting a wall.
Spray at the root, about 6-8 inches away.
Once you've completed all of the sections, let hair dry for a minute.

Using the towel, rub at your roots, just like you would if your hair was wet. You can use your fingers as well, but I find the towel does better at removing residue, plus I don't like the brown powder on my hands.
Use the brush to continue working the product out of the roots to give hair more volume.
Style as desired.

How NOT to Use:

Dry shampoo is not applied to hair the same way as hairspray.
Apply at the roots only, not on the top layer of hair.
Don't spray heavily and then brush out. Short bursts, towel drying your roots, and brushing will work the best.
Use clear or brown powder dry shampoo if your hair is dark to yield best results.

How To: Wavy Curls

One of my favorite hairstyles is the wavy curl.
It's not totally wavy, and not a ringlet curl either--it's sort of in between. Here are my inspirations:

Tools:

1 in curling iron--you will use the clamp
Brush
Hairspray
Smaller curling iron/wand (optional)
Styling paste/putty/wax (optional)
Heat protectant spray (spray and let dry before curling)

Method:

Separate brushed hair into 2 sections, and work from back to front--that's how I do it. Separate hair how you'd like (some do 3 sections: top and sides) or work front to back. I tend to do what is the quickest for me. This hairstyle takes me about 10 minutes.
Lift up the clamp on the curling iron and slide a 1 inch section of hair to the middle of the section. Make sure you are curling away from your face.

Let go of the clamp and roll up the iron close to the scalp. Close the clamp and hold a few seconds (5-10, depending on thickness).

Move down the section of hair by sliding down and rolling up, until you get to the end of your section. Spray hair.
Repeat until all hair is curled. Once hair has cooled, feel free to separate curly waves with fingers. Spray hair all over. You're finished!

Once hair has cooled, use the smaller curling wand/iron to go back over any pieces that didn't curl or you can pick random sections (optional)
To get more of a piecey look, rub a dime-sized amount of paste in your hands, and pick random sections of hair (like a piece by your face). Work the product lightly onto the section, starting in the middle and focusing on the ends. (optional)

PS: By starting the curl in the middle of the hair, instead of the end and rolling up, you will get the wavy curly and avoid the ringlet curl.

12 Months of Resolutions: A Year In Review

Happy 2012! As the new year began, I joined the masses in reflecting upon the new year. And something I can look back fondly is my 12 Months of Resolutions series. Instead of making a mass of resolutions and completing none, I decided to do something different each month, in the hopes that the resolution would stick. Some months had excellent surprises, while a couple left me disappointed. While 12 Months of Resolutions didn't focus specifically on beauty or DIY, it did focus on my life, which I like to share with you. I hope you check them out and maybe you'll be inspired!

How To: Use False Eyelashes

False lashes--they look like so intimidating, but they truly aren't. With just a little bit of practice, you'll be a pro in no time...or just in time for New Year's Eve. Enjoy!

1. Buy your lashes. I highly suggest natural-looking ones, like these from ELF--only $1. If your lashes are light, go for brown ones, otherwise it'll be obvious you're wearing false lashes. I suggest applying mascara before applying lashes, but that's my personal preference. I don't use eyeliner until I'm finished with everything.

2. Get to know your lashes. You'll notice the lashes are tacky and how the lashes start from small to large--this helps you identify which lash goes on which eye. Play with them a bit. Bend them. Maybe try putting them on. Does it help to start in the middle? Beginning? End?

3. Cut and paste. If you still feel intimidated, try my best tip: cutting the lashes in half (or even in third or fourths). Apply the glue and wait a minute. Make sure to concentrate glue on the ends.

4. Apply. How you apply them depends on if you cut your lashes or not. You might want to try just half lashes, focusing on the ends, if you'd like. The rule of thumb is to apply from the center out. It's easier for me to apply them from the end to the beginning, so that's how I do it. Get close to the lash line and match it up to your lashes. Press and then just keep lining it up until the end. Then gently press the beginning, middle, and end and let it set for a minute or two. Remember, you are not in a rush, so take your time. Just peel off the lashes and start over. Don't forget the glue!

5. Curl. Using an eyelash curler, curl your joined lashes together--I'm just about to do this in the picture above. Add mascara and eyeliner to your real lashes/lash line if needed. When the party's over, peel the lashes and store in the original container or discard. Enjoy!

Outfit of the Week: Candy Cane Memories

As I write this, I've just returned to Atlanta from a five-hour trek home for Christmas and wedding celebrations. My eyeliner is smudged from rubbing the sun out of my eyes. My nails are chipped cherry-red, leftover from the wedding. My hair is a tangled mess of curls. My bun needs no pins to keep its shape; just a knot. I'm wearing a rumpled cardigan rescued from my cursorily-packed bag, as the temperature has dropped twenty degrees. This is the uniform my family sees when I visit them. I live in pajama pants from Target and think about brushing my hair. I am comfortable. I am content. And planning outfits is the furthest thing from my mind.

It's time to unpack and unwind. There's mail to be sorted (that can wait) and wine to drink (that cannot wait). Before I sign off, I leave you with the outfit I wore for my drive home last week. Christmas has come and gone, but I'm reminiscing of candy cane memories.

Let This Be A Lesson...

I've had something on my mind for quite a while now, and instead of letting it fester inside, I'm getting it off my chest. Some of you will laugh, and some of you won't read this at all, but I'll feel better having said it. This is something that has happened to me time and time again and I'm sick of it. Example: I had someone leave a comment with a typo about loving my "eye scrub" recipe. There was no eye scrub mentioned in the post (who the heck would want an eye scrub? Ouch!). I had 8 others who left comments about this imaginary "eye scrub." Skip to the comments much? Let me share a story...

When I first started blogging, I made a personal goal of visiting 10 blogs a day. One afternoon, I clicked on one blog and saw pics of a beautiful girl at her wedding and lots and lots of text. In order to hurriedly meet my quota, I skipped the post and went straight for the comments. I saw a congratulatory comment and I followed suit.

And then I got an email I will never forget.

The beautiful girl at her wedding emailed me to tell me the post was NOT about her wedding, but about her husband who had just been killed in a car accident. If I had taken the time to actually read the post, instead of just hurrying to comment/copying a comment, I would've saved myself a horrible gaffe. Despite my apologetic emails and sincere comments, she never visited my blog, responded to my messages, and I didn't blame her one bit.

I learned a lesson that day and I hope you did too.

If someone takes the time to write a post, take the time to read it.

Don't copy someone's comment. Read the post first.

It is ALWAYS obvious when you don't read a post. ALWAYS.

And the sad thing is, the ones who are guilty of doing this, are the ones who stopped reading about two sentences in and instead will leave me a comment about books.

I'm grateful for each and every one of you who take the time to visit and/or leave a thoughtful comment, and so many of your comments make me smile from ear to ear. I can't thank you enough.

Developing a thick skin is part of blogging, but sometimes too much is too much. I am an emotional human, and I love sharing those feelings with you. But those insincere comments have also taught me a lesson: plot/plan/work on improving my blog. I have so many things to share with you in 2012.

I hope you join me.

Autumn Bucket List: Revisited

How was your Christmas/holiday? Mine was a whirlwind of activity! Thanks to some awful traffic, I made it to the rehearsal dinner just in time. Then, my brother had his Christmas Eve wedding. I still can't believe my lil bro is married! *tears*

He is so bad but adorable!

And yesterday was a flurry of wrapping paper and 2 nephews throwing toys. Whew! I'm glad to have a day to relax before heading back to Atlanta. I like a nice, quiet holiday. But I like to accomplish things as well, and that's where my Autumn Bucket List comes into play. Let's see what I did!

1. Make an apple pie--COMPLETED! I used this recipe and it turned out ok!

2. Visit a pumpkin patch--COMPLETED!

3. Visit a corn maze--COMPLETED!

4. Catch a falling leaf--COMPLETED! I don't have a pic of this, but trust me, I did it!
5. Go star gazing--COMPLETED! My sister and I did this, but not in the back of a truck like my original inspiration.
6. Make S'mores--COMPLETED! I didn't even think to take a pic of these. Hmph.

Happy Friday! Happy second day of winter! Happy day 23 of Blogmas. While you're reading this, I'll be making the 5-hour pilgrimage home for Christmas and my Brother's Christmas Eve wedding. I'll be attending parties and the wedding, so I'll need lots of hair style options. I thought I would share some of my ideas with you--these styles would be perfect for holiday parties, gatherings, or even New Year's Eve. Enjoy!

Loose Curls

2 in curling iron and use this tutorial

Velcro Roller Curls

Poof & Pull

Poof hair & pull back

Try this look instead.

Twist

Take 2 sections of hair and twist together. Secure with pins. If desired, repeat on other side.

Braided Headband

Take a section of hair behind the ear and braid.

Bring through hair and over your head, like a headband.

Secure and repeat on the other side.

Braided Bun

Divide hair in half. Make 2 braids and pin in a bun.

Bun Behind Ear

Pull hair to one side and loop into a bun. Pin and add a pin/brooch.

Pony Pin

Pull hair to one side and fasten in a loose pony. Add a pin/brooch.

How To: Subtle Holiday Shimmer

"You could NOT need anymore makeup!" said my friend as I opened the My Glam bag and I mentally removed him from my Christmas list.
"But I use this stuff all the time! I need it!" I pleaded.
"Ok, use all of those samples at the same time," he said.
I like a challenge, so that's exactly what I did!

Check out my Subtle Holiday Shimmer look--perfect for a holiday party or New Year's Eve. It's also great for those of us who don't wear makeup often, but want a little something extra. Read on:

To remove any oil, I patted my face with the lavender Mai Couture blotting sheets.

I applied the Urban Decay Eyeshadow primer to my lids.

Using a flat brush, I patted the UD shadow in Sin (already owned it in the Naked Palette, shh!) all over my lid. I used a fluffy brush to blend it towards my eyebrows.

I dabbed a the tip of the Lights, Cameras, Lashes mascara by Tarte on my eyelids--yes you read that right--and smudged it out.
Next, I brushed on one coat of the Tarte mascara on my eyelashes. I define a coat as only dipping in the bottle once.

The Mai Couture also came with blush papers--I rubbed one on my cheeks. These are amazing for travel--no mess!

I completed the look by putting the NYX Soft Matte Cream on my lips--it goes on like a gloss, but feels like a lipstick that sets matte. Maybe it's because I have a cold, but it felt more like a lip stain that you could wipe off to me.
For a little more subtle shimmer, I dabbed the UD shadow in Sin right above my Cupid's Bow and right in the center of my bottom lip.

The lid is very shimmery--but the camera isn't picking up on it!

12 Months of Resolutions: December (& November Revisited)

It's my last month of resolutions!! I cannot believe it. I'm currently debating whether to continue this series into next year, or if to just mix it into another post. What do you think? Regardless, I'll do a wrap up post next month, listing every resolution and such.

For November, I wanted to be UBER THANKFUL!
Grade: A
Notes: I feel weird sharing all of the things I did/said over the month. I don't want it to seem like I'm bragging or something--look what I DID! Look AT ME! Blah. That's not why I did it. Here are a few things I did:

I did a verbal and written list of something I was thankful for daily.
I forgave someone--and that was really hard to do. I think I'm still in progress there.
I donated clothes to Goodwill.
I helped collect coats for the Men's Home.
I helped with a canned food drive.
I helped knit hats for cancer patients.
I gave a stranger gas money.
I edited an unemployed friend's resume.

Would I do this again?

Certainly. We need to stop spending so much time complaining, and realize how lucky we are. Even in our darkest days, we are still so fortunate.

To wrap up the year, I chose something completely random for December: stop eating red meat for a month. This stemmed from having food poisoning so many times this year. I just cannot take being sick anymore.

I'm also going completely meatless once a week.

And I'm only eating out once a week (this one I have already failed!)

ELLE ENTERTAINS: Hot Cocoa Bar

Merry Blogmas! It's Day 16! One of my resolutions for NEXT year (so far that's the only resolution I've come up with) is to actually finish a blog draft or two a week (of 750). Well, one of them, from 2010 (eep!) was for this party. And this weekend IT IS ON! This is a fabulous idea for those that love to entertain but would like an inexpensive party. I was originally going to do this in the winter, but why not now? Check out my inspiration boards:

Decor:
Since my house is already decorated for Christmas (with a Hanukkah vase for good measure), I'm not doing anything special (yet another reason to have this party--decorations are done!).

The Bar:

I wanted to show three different options for the bar set ups. Since I will have regular and alcohol hot cocoa, I will have two different areas.

The Glasses:

I got my glasses at the Dollar Store--no joke. And I love the idea of the clear glass ornaments for cocoa! Cute!

The Drinks:

The traditional hot cocoa will be in a Crock Pot--it will make serving/hosting easier.
As for the bar-bar, I hate it when someone/hostess gets stuck playing Bartender. I'll have recipes/suggestions written out so guests can fix what they'd like. The bottom two pictures are mine--I just made the Spiked Marshmallow Cocoa to try it out for the party (success!), and the Mint Mocha is from a post last year. How To: Bella's Wedding Makeup & Hair

What do you do when you've got a cold AND pale skin? Why, create a hair/makeup tutorial of a cold, pale movie character of course! I was probably the only person taking notes while watching Breaking Dawn like a nerd! Have you seen it yet? What did you think? While I can't deliver Edward, I can show you how to look like Bella on her wedding day.

Let's start with the makeup:

Keep skin as natural as possible, covering blemishes/imperfections.
Use a slightly peachy pink blush and lipgloss.
For eyes, brush a champagne shade all over lid. I used Sin from Urban Decay.
Using a crease brush, work a chocolate shade into the crease and blend down to lower lash line.
Apply black eyeliner on the upper lash line only and smudge.
Two coats of mascara complete the look. Time: 5 Minutes

For the hair:

Can you braid? Twist? Pin approx. 584930 bobby pins? Then you can do this hairstyle! This style is great for those of us with super-straight hair.

Brush out hair.Part your hair on one side.
Take a section of hair on each side and twist, kind of like a French twist. Pin.
Take a section from behind your ear. Braid and pin. Repeat on other side.
Pull hair together like your going to do a ponytail, but instead, twist up hair, and clip hair. You could also pin hair into place, but for thick hair, it's faster just to clip it. We'll hide the clip with hair!
If hair is layered, like mine, apply a bit of gel to the remaining hair and smooth through.
Take the remaining hair and roll around two fingers, just like you are rolling your hair on hot rollers.
Pin into place and spray hair.
Separate some wispy pieces from the front (I did this first, actually).

Bella had a fancy hair pin and veil, if you're feeling super authentic! Time: 15 min.

Steps 1-3, 8

Hair parted, twisted, braided, pinned, wispy hair pieces

Hair is clipped up in a clip and rolled under and pinned.

I ran out of wrapping paper mid-wrap! Wrapping presents is one of my LEAST fave things ever. And I am bad at spatial recognition, so it's no surprise that I had to make a quick trip for more paper. I wore this mustard cardi, from Target.$14

Maybe you're invited to a party and need a quick gift. Or the office party. Or Secret Santa. Or a Stocking Stuffer. Or...you get the idea. Maybe you need a gift for the hard-to-buy-for teen girl. Cater these to your style and budget. Feel free to swap out products, as these are merely suggestions. Remember, it's all about the presentation, too. Put these in a cute bag or add a fancy bow. Enjoy!

Idea #1: The Beginner Eyes Kit

The is for the girl who wants to begin wearing eye shadow but doesn't know where to start. The kit includes:

Basic Mascara (I like CoverGirl's Great Lash or Maybelline's One by One) $3-5
Eye Shadow Palette (Wet N Wild has great pigmentation for such a low price--this one is Walking on Eggshells and is so wearable. And the directions are printed right on the product/package) $3-4

Holiday Glitz

Cheap Treats: NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil in Milk

something I love that is fewer than $10! Enjoy.

I know what you're thinking: Elle, what in the 'ell am I gonna do with white eyeliner? But wait! You totally need this in your makeup drawer/case/bag/sock (huh?). My Cheap Treat for this week is the Jumbo Eye Pencil in Milk by NYX, and it's only $4. This little nifty pencil is so versatile! Here are just a few of the uses I've found (just be sure to blend!!):

run it under your nails to whiten them (does that make sense?)
use as a highlighter underneath your eyebrows or the inner corners of your eyes
use as an eye shadow base/primer
use as a eyeliner base
blend just a little in the center of your lips to make them appear bigger (no white should show)
draw where you want your eyebrow shape to be (like when you're plucking your eyebrows)
change the shade of lipstick, liner or shadow by mixing in some of the white
line your waterline on your bottom lashes to make eyes look more awake--MY FAVE! It works!

Although I was just picking out a tree under a tent in a parking lot, I wanted to play the part like I was really at a Christmas Tree farm, a tradition of years passed. It was just a little chilly, so I wore my purple plaid shirt from Target, $16.
Underneath I wore an Old Navy tee, $10.
Jeans and my Fuggs. Whenever I do an outfit post collage, it is exactly what I wore, or as close as I can find it. But I didn't actually wear Uggs; I wore my Fake Uggs, that I only wear to walk Charlie or get the mail. I'm so embarrassed I wore them, but I'm keepin' it realz. With a z.

Product Test Drive: Urban Decay Naked Palette 2 Review

When Urban Decay released the original Naked Palette, it quickly sold out of stores and became one of the best-selling products. It took me forever to get one--I had to wait until Ulta sold it online. It became my favorite palette of all time. When the announcement came December 1 that there would be a new palette, I HAD to have it. Just a couple of short days later, I have it and can't wait to share it with you! How it arrived

This is how it arrives, with a wonderful, wearable pink lipgloss. The gloss is similar to Le Gloss by L'Oreal, and is minty on the lips. I also received a gold eyeliner sample.
Once I popped it out of the packaging, which I discarded, I noticed the palette was in a metal box, kind of like a little paint box. I love this thicker, more durable packaging.

I LOVE the huge mirror. In the pic I left the protective covering that comes on (so it wouldn't show my reflection).
This palette is filled with more shimmery tones, and ends with a black instead of that sparkly grey.

The gorgeous shades

It comes with a double-ended crease and shading brush.
The shades range from matte, shimmer, and glitter. Five of the shades are brand new.

The only shade that is the same is Half-baked.
There are no dupes, but a couple of the shades are sorta similar, but I could easily tell the difference.
There are still 12 shades, and the size of the pans is the same for both.
UD NP 2 is only slightly larger in packaging.
Verdict? I love neutrals, so I love this palette! I was also glad to see black this time.
Should you buy NP 1 or 2? That's really hard to say. I feel like 1 had so much fall out, and this one doesn't. If you've never bought either, want something really durable, want a big mirror, then get 2.
Naked 1 seems more versatile to me, as far as shades go. And 2 had more shimmery shades.
The packaging is much better, and will be great for traveling.

How To: Quick & Easy Rainy Day Hair Ideas

Ready to solve the case? It's easy! Let's start with the products:

When washing your hair on a rainy day, I suggest using a hair serum, like Frizz Ease, or a styling cream, like this one from Living Proof. Don't forget that hairspray either! But since I don't wash my hair daily (more like once or twice a week), I like to rely on hairstyles to help me beat the frizz. Even if you don't change your hair at all on rainy days, here are a few ideas:

1. The usual: messy side braid

Pull hair to one side.

Braid.

Secure with elastic.

10 seconds+

2. Kick it up a notch: braided bun

Take side braid & wrap around itself.

Pin into place.

30 seconds+

3. The usual: the ballerina bun

Brush & twist hair into bun (or make bun messy).

Secure with bobby or spin pins.

30 seconds+

4. Kick it up a notch: scarf+ bun

Wrap scarf around bun and tie underneath hair or on top.

1 minute+

5. The usual: low pony (forgot to take a pic, so use your imagination!)

6. Kick it up a notch: twisted low pony

Divide hair into two sections.

Twist each side, combine into ponytail.

Secure with elastic.

30 seconds+

Quick Party Makeup!

And just what are you up to this weekend? Any holiday parties coming up? I have one (and I'm throwing one too! Details soon.) that's on a weeknight (!!!). Due to lovely Atlanta traffic, I won't have time to drive home, get dolled up, and drive to the party. Here is my tried-and-true Quick Party Makeup--I can do this in 5 minutes, and you can too. Here are the steps:

If needed, put some HD Powder on your face. It's great for minimizing fine lines, hiding imperfections, and adding a little brightness. Mine's from ELF for $6, and rivals the expensive brands.
Looking a little tired from that long day at work? Try a little highlighter, like this one from Benefit. Apply it under brow bones, above cupid's bow, or along cheeks. Highlighter is available in liquid, cream, or creamy stick form, so choose the kind that's right for you.
Ok, so the highlighter isn't your thing? A bright blush (I like pink) is great for night, adds color, and is wearable by anyone. The one pictured is from Stila and adjusts to you!
I like to play up my eyes at night and keep my lips neutral. One tool I swear by is the mascara curler. I curl 5 seconds at the base, 3 seconds in the middle, and one last crimp at the end.
Make a little cat eye or increase the drama with liquid liner. This one is waterproof too! TIP: depending on your dress, try a different colored liner, like plum.
A volumizing mascara, like this one from L'Oreal, is essential to any party look.
I mentioned earlier it's all about the eyes for a party look, so I usually go for a clear or light gloss.
EXTRA TIP: Chapstick is one of my party clutch essentials. I use a little on my eyelids to make them shiny (ex: if I don't use eyeshadow, like with a cat eye). I also use it on my heels to prevent blisters. Zipper stuck on your dress? Try some Chapstick. I seriously have over 50 uses for it (one day I'll post them). Not a makeup fan? Dab on some bright lipstick and go!

And one of those ideas is the old stand-by; What's In My Bag? I can't believe I've never done one of these (I've done my Carry On, Summer Beauty Bag, Autumn Beauty Bag posts before). I GUARANTEE to have at least something you don't. Ok, maybe not. I like aubergine--have a drink every time I mention that color. It's time to play WHAT'S IN ELLE'S BAG!

ROW 1:

The striped case from F21 holds oil blotting sheets in the spring/summer and tissues in the fall/winter.
My teeny LV wallet from a trip to Paris
A pen for ideas or writing addresses on packages (the aubergine notepad is in my car...I hope)
Hand sanitizer...always...random: I had this brand that smells like FROOT LOOPS but can't find it. Anyone have any idea what I'm talking about?
EOS lip balm...or I use Softlips
Purse hanger; tacky but it works!

ROW 2:

New Trent charger--it charges anything with a USB cord! A lifesaver!
Mint/floss/toothpick holder
Aubergine business card holder--also great for holding ID/card/cash for the occasional Night Out

ROW 3:

DIY solid perfume--random fact: I've put this right under my nose for those stinky cab/subway rides
Odor Away drops--because using public bathrooms makes me nervous, and uh, trust me, these drops work.

Droid Bionic--with an aubergine (ok, purple) case. I love my Droid and don't want an Iphone. Don't hate! ;)
Germx Soft Wipes--because hand sanitizer isn't enough

AND NOW FOR MY TWO FAVORITE LUCKY ITEMS OF ALL TIME...

My Lil Sis gave me this yellow butterfly hair clip when she was 3. I don't know why. You don't ask these things of a 3 yr old. You just say thanks. She's 16 now, thinks she's all grown and ish, but when she laughs it still sounds like she's 3. When I miss her, I look at the clip. And then call/text her obnoxiously until she answers ;)
My Lil Bro asked my Mama for a quarter at the gas station when he was 5. "I want to get a present for Nan (my family nickname)," he said matter-of-factly. He went to one of those quarter (are they still a quarter?) toy/gumball machines and out came a plastic ball with 3 pairs of earrings. I carry these teeny earrings to remind me of how close we were when he was little. I miss that. He's 21 now; taller than me, a man, a Daddy, and an almost-husband, but he'll always be my sweet baby brother.

DIY: Holiday-Flavored Pout Plumpers

About this time of year, some of us get the DIY bug--that THIS year we are doing HOMEMADE GIFTS for EVERYONE. That thought usually lasts about 5 minutes once you realize all the time/money/people you need to make gifts for/attention span (wait, that's just me). Well, I have a solution for you. Here's an easy, cheap, and quick DIY that makes a cute stocking stuffer (or a gift for yourself because you were so good this year). I made these Holiday-Flavored Pout Plumpers in the flavors of Cinnamon Bun and Candy Cane. And I made some labels to print out. Enjoy!

You'll need:

Extract/flavoring (I used vanilla, mint, and cinnamon)
Plain chapstick (I got 4 for $1)
Microwave
Microwavable measuring glass/cup
Toothpicks
Small funnel
Food coloring (optional)
Pot holders/towel (optional)

Method:

Roll chapstick all the way to the top.
Take from base and put into microwavable measuring cup.
Roll the empty tube back to the base--this is important.
With toothpick, cut the chapstick into smaller pieces.

Place chapstick-filled measuring cup into microwave for 1 minute.
Carefully remove and stir/cut/chop/smile at the chapstick and put back into microwave for another minute/minute and a half.
Once completely liquefied, remove from microwave and add 5 drops of desired flavor.
For the Candy Cane flavor, I also added 2 drops of red food coloring. For the Cinnamon Bun, I did 5 drops of cinnamon and 2 of vanilla.
Stir.

The liquid will start to solidify, so pop back into the microwave for a few seconds to melt again. Use a pot holder/towel if the cup is too hot.
Pour the mixture into the funnel, which will fill up the tube.
Remove funnel once filled and let cool. Resist urge to try your DIY.
Pop the top on, print out the label onto label paper, and attach to tube. Tie some curling ribbon, put in a cute bag, stuff in a stocking or my purse, etc.

Candy Cane (mint + red food coloring) and Cinnamon Buns (cinnamon + vanilla)

Tips:

Make sure you roll the empty tube back down before pouring the hot mixture!
You can use a spoon and a bowl, but I've found pouring & wax removal easier by using toothpicks and a measuring cup.
The liquid solidifies fast, so you have to work fast...but that's a good thing, making this a 5- MINUTE DIY (yeah!).
Don't fret if there's leftover wax in the cup/bowl. You will have to lose a smidge of the wax to make space for the flavoring.
No funnel? Make your own from paper.
Natural beeswax can be used as well--I just found the process easier & cheaper by buying the chapstick.
The mint and cinnamon temporarily plump lips by aggravating the top layer of skin, so be warned if you/whomever are allergic to those flavors.
Not a fan of those flavors? Use whatever flavors you'd like--I used these because they (a) remind me of the holidays (b) plump my lips.

Outfit of the Week: Neapolitan

When & What: This is what I wore for Thanksgiving, and it was influenced by an eye shadow palette. Seriously! And it made me think of Neapolitan ice cream, hence the outfit title.

Where: I always drive 5 hours with pup in tow, to my Mom's house, and usually the weather is hot. Ah, South Georgia. But this Thanksgiving was different: the weather was in the low 60s, and we didn't eat a Mom's, but at near a pond (see pics below) in the middle of nowhere. It was a nice change and just so peaceful.

The rest of my weekend was celebrating Nephew #1's 3rd birthday and doing some online shopping. My step-dad and I usually venture out to the Black Friday sales, but stayed in and watched all the college football games we could!

Heard: Chinese by Lily Allen on Grooveshark

Chinese, Lily Allen. I've written before about my synesthesia, and when I hear this song, it sounds pink and dreamy, kinda like the neapolitan colors in my outfit. And the song's about her mom, and I'm thankful for my Mom!

I have this soft pink cardi (mine was from Old Navy on clearance, for about $5), which was perfect for sitting by the pond.
Underneath I wore a brown tee, again from Old Navy $5.
We keep our Thanksgivings casual, and jeans are just about required.
To complete the look, I added a necklace, boots (H&M for $31), and soft eye makeup from this Wet N' Wild palette.

Cheap Treats: The Perfect Holiday Polish (N.Y.C. in Chelsea)

When do you start decorating for the holidays? Is the tree up before the turkey's cold? I make myself wait until a couple of days after Thanksgiving. I like to decorate my nails too! With all of those holiday parties, and I think I've found the perfect polish. It's an excellent choice when you want more than just regular red, but don't want all that glitter. It has just a bit of shimmer that shines when the lights hit.

For this week's Cheap Treat, I'm sharing N.Y.C. In a New York Minute Quick Dry Polish in Chelsea. It's around $2, dries fast, and is a much cheaper alternative to other polishes, like OPI's You Rock--Apulco Red. Here's an EXTREME CLOSEUP (woo!):

It's a candy apple red with a subtle shimmer and it only needs two coats. With clear coat (not pictured), it's chip-free for at least a week or two. I just adore it!

How was your Thanksgiving? I'm still stuffed and still visiting with family. Speaking of family, this week's Cheap Treat comes from a family request from earlier this year--my mom and sisters have gorgeous curly, fine hair (brown, blonde, and red, respectively). I have dark brown, wavy, wiry, thick hair. Anyway, my Mom and Lil Sis asked if I knew any tricks to get their hair to grow and I had a few. Our hair changes due to stress, age, etc, and I had a period of time where my hair got thinner. There are several tricks I used, and one I swear by is Biotin--it really works and is around $2.99+ a bottle. Your hair will grow fast!

Outfit of the Week: Autumn Song

What I Wore:

How was your weekend? Mine was great--my Lil Sis is here (!!!) and I wrote one of my fave posts ever--scroll down to see my latest tutorial. But back to the outfit, I wore this comfy, casual outfit out to dinner with friends, and since I'm hanging with my sis, this post will be short. Sidenote: I've gotten food poisoning for the 4th time since June, so I'm giving up red meat for a bit. Ok, but seriously back to the outfit.
I wore a white tee with a khaki button up shirt, since the weather was a little cool. Sidenote again: it was 50 on Saturday and is 75 today. Hmph.
I also wore some comfy, ripped up old jeans and brown boots. I kinda felt like I was in a modern safari or something. Sidenote: I'm scared of most animals, so I doubt I'd ever be on a safari, but still...
To top it off, I wore a green scarf (last seen here and here), a brown smokey eye, wavy hair, and a berry lip.
